Fortunately, wired devices are fast becoming extinct and do not pose a great threat. Nevertheless, let us secure these with our 3-layer model.
Security Layer 1: Placement of the modem
It is a good idea to place these devices in a public or family area. This discourages viewing porn using these devices.
Security Layer 2: Activate only one internet cable in the house
Having multiple cable wire outlets is one of the spoils of urban living. This can also spoil your plans to protect your family!
A cable internet wire looks is pictured on the right. There are several such outlets in
a wired modern house. I will encourage you to have only one active, the one in a public area. Connect your modem to the other outlets to check if any of the others are active. If they are, call your service provider to deactivate them or snip them. Snip, snip!
Security Layer 3: Parental controls on your modem
If your modem also doubles up as a router, it certainly has parental controls. An example of this is the Actiontec 300 Mbps Wireless-N DSL Modem Router (GT784WN).
Some modern modems have parental controls. The Motorola SurfBoard SB 6580 is a good cable modem with parental controls and website blocker. You will need to access the interface to turn these on. This is done by using a browser and going to a certain IP address. Please refer to your user guide for details.
Great Tip: In most cases the modem belongs to your internet service provider (ISP) and is leased to you. Please call your ISP to ask about getting access to your modem. Is they cannot allow you access, you may think about getting your own modem instead. Looking for another compelling reason to own your modem? Did you know that your ISP charges you $4-$8 every month for leasing the modem? Most modems cost just $60-$100. Do the math and you’ll end up saving money.
